LEGO and Sony Officially bring the Original PlayStation Back to Life — Brick by Brick

Thirty years after it first blinked to life in living rooms around the world, the original PlayStation is getting a full-blown brick tribute. Sony Interactive Entertainment and the LEGO Group, after many leaks, finally announced during Sony's September 3, 2026 State of Play broadcast: the LEGO 72306 PlayStation, the two companies' first-ever collaboration on a console-based physical set — and it's every bit the nostalgia bomb PS1 fans have been waiting for.

This isn't a loose, stylized tribute either. The 1,911-piece build is a near 1:1 scale recreation of the console that redefined gaming back in December 1994, coming in at roughly 26 cm wide, 19 cm deep, and 6 cm tall — practically indistinguishable from the real thing on a shelf. LEGO didn't stop at the console, either: the set includes a fully brick-built version of the original pre-DualShock controller, which plugs directly into the console's front port for that unmistakable "plugging in for a gaming session" feel. Even the Power and Open buttons are functional. Sony's Steffi Steffen summed up the spirit behind the collaboration, saying the set celebrates "the games, experiences, and the feelings of play" that have defined the PlayStation community for three decades.

Two Secret Dioramas Hidden Inside

Here's where things get really fun: pop open the disc tray, and you'll uncover two miniature dioramas tucked inside, each paying homage to a landmark PS1 title. One recreates a slice of the Gran Turismo racing circuit — sharp-eyed fans over at GTPlanet have already identified it as the legendary Autumn Ring track. The other brings Ape Escape's island setting to life, complete with a color-swappable monkey helmet that flips between blue and red.

And in a delightfully ironic twist, that Ape Escape nod comes with some built-in trivia: the game was the very first title to require DualShock's analog sticks to function — meaning the pre-DualShock controller included in this exact set couldn't actually run it. Intentional or not, it's a detail retro gaming diehards are sure to notice. Ape Escape seems like a odd choice of games to have included in this, specially given the more famous Playstation Mascots over the years such as Crash Bandicoot. This decision probably came down to licensing more than anything at the end of the day.

The LEGO PlayStation will run $179.99 in the US, with regional pricing landing at roughly £139.99, €159.99, and ¥27,980 elsewhere. Fans eager to get their hands on it first can snag it starting October 1, 2026, through LEGO Insiders Early Access and direct.playstation.com across several countries, ahead of a wider rollout via LEGO.com and retail stores on October 4.
